Adoption Process

The details vary by adoption, but families usually move through the same major stages.

Prospective parents review adoption paperwork together.

From first contact to finalization

Each stage has its own requirements. Matching Hearts can explain what applies to the adoption path you are considering.

  4. 04

    Matching

Possible matches are considered based on the child's needs and the prospective family's readiness and strengths.

  5. 05

    Placement

The child is placed with the adoptive family when the process reaches that stage. Follow-up may be required.

  6. 06

    Finalization

Remaining post-placement, legal, and court requirements are completed before the adoption is finalized.

Placement and finalization are separate stages. Some adoptions require post-placement visits, reports, or supervision before the legal process is complete.
